As a manager, you may want to infuse your team with some extra motivation over a certain period of time. One of the best ways to do that is with some friendly competition! If you have admin permissions in Hoopla, you have the ability to initiate single-elimination, seeded challenges between Players and Teams, based on your existing Leaderboard configurations. Here's how!

How to Initiate a Tournament

  1. In the admin panel, go to Configure > Challenges > Tournaments.

  2. Click Initiate on the top right hand side of the screen.

  3. Select which Leaderboard should "host" the Tournament. The Tournament score will be calculated based on the primary ranking Metric of the Leaderboard you choose.
    1. If you picked a Player Leaderboard, your Tournament will involve match-ups between individual Players.
    2. If you picked a Team Leaderboard, your Tournament will involve match-ups between individual Teams
      * Leaderboards must contain a minimum of four players/teams

  4. Select the Tournament Participants. You may select either:
    1. All participants on Leaderboard.
*The maximum allowed number of participants for a tournament challenge is 64; if your Leaderboard contains more than 64 players, only the top-ranked 64 will be included.
    2. Specific participants on Leaderboard.
      * You must select a minimum of four participants.

  5. Click Next.

  6. Edit your Tournament Bracket
    1. We will pre-populate tournament brackets based on the seeded modal (i.e. top ranked player can play the bottom ranked player, etc.)
    2. If you want to adjust the participant match-ups, click into the dropdown menu next to the participant name to change the participant.
    3. Byes: If the number of your participants is not a power of 2 (4, 8, 16, 32, 64), byes will be awarded to the top ranked participants, such that they automatically advance to the next round.

  7. Click Next.

  8. Schedule your Tournament.
    1. Select a time zone for your Tournament challenge (we will default to your browser timezone).
    2. Schedule a start/end date/time for each round.
    3. Rounds must be a minimum of 5 minutes long, and the interval between each round must be a minimum of 5 minutes.

  9. Tie Treatment - If a round ends in a tie, you may specify which participant should advance to the next round. Select either:
    1. Advance the player with the higher rank on the Leaderboard or
    2. Advance the player with the greater rank improvement on the Leaderboard

  10. Click Initiate when you're done.
    • If this Leaderboard is part of your Channel Lineup, you'll see the Tournament on TV when the round begins.
    • Participants will see Tournament details on their activity feed.

Within the Tournaments tile, you will see a list of all Active and Scheduled Tournaments. Toggle between All/Active/Future in the tope right hand corner to narrow down your view.

How does scoring work?

  1. Tournament scoring:
    • The primary Metric on the Leaderboard on which you based your Tournament will be used to calculate the score.
    • Scores starts at 0-0 and increment each time a participant improves their value for the Metric during the Tournament.
    • A Player's/Team's total points at the end of the Tournament round will be the net difference between their score at the beginning and their score at the end.

  2. What happens if the score is tied at the end?
    • If the score is tied at the end of a round, we will advance the player specified in the tie treatment section from the Tournament's configuration.
    • Once a Tournament has been created, you may not adjust the tie treatment settings.
    • In the case where the participants in a round match-up each have both the same Leaderboard rank and Leaderboard rank improvement, we will randomly select a participant to advance to the next round.
